Portugal is... an european country, in the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal only has frontiers with Spain, since Macau went to chinese administration by the end of 1999. watered by the Atlantic Ocean, including the Madeira and Azores archipelagos. a Democratic Republic. The President of the Republic is now (2005) Dr. Jorge Sampaio. The Prime Minister is Engº José Sócrates . a beautiful country, in constant progress and great social harmony, diversified in its people, natural resources and a land of opportunities. In the picture, we can spot the cities of Lisbon and Abrantes, which are highlighted in red. Lisbon and Abrantes are the most important cities in my life. The Tagus River is not highlighted, but it is the one who crosses Abrantes and ends up in Lisbon. The Mondego River is also not highlighted, being the one crossing Coimbra. Both Douro and Guadiana rivers are well identified. The picture shows the great extension of the portuguese sea coast and the mountainous nature of the terrestrial frontiers with Spain. It is not captioned, but in Covilhã, there is the Serra da Estrela, more than 2000 meters high and a Winter Sports resort. |

Abrantes is... the centermost city in Portugal, also know as the "Garden City", since its streets have lots of floral sceneries. a city of high strategic importance, given its geographic location. The castle of Abrantes is set so high, that it allows to watch over 60 miles far. the city where I was born. The municipality of Abrantes has over 50000 inhabitants and keeps growing in an ordered way. The municipality retains its population and has the means to offer a greater than average quality of life. The services sector is dominant, but there is industry with national weight, in absolute terms. The picture shows the castle of Abrantes and several surrounding houses. |

Lisbon is... the capital of Portugal, center of the country's political activity and home of the country's biggest airport. an extremely stressing place to drive, with roads filled of cars and shortcuts through narrow streets. the city where one can find some of Europe's best universities. an expensive city to live in, but offering superb access to culture. The picture shows the Lisbon's harbour. |
