Title: On the road #04 - Fog / Portugal

Date: Winter 2001

Story:

The world's most serious car accidents happen due to short visibility. When visibility drops, drivers usually don't slow down enough, becoming potential seeds for chain collisions. Fog is a frequent cause of poor visibility. These pictures show some early morning dense fog, on Portugal's A1 route, that links Lisbon to oPorto.

Why don't people drive at a proper speed, in these conditions? There can be many explanations, and one of them is biological. It seems that our brain can get confused with the appearence of fog itself, taking his time, trying to understand how far it can read the picture, despite the picture being constantly changing...

As the sun warmed up the air, the fog slowly dissipated. In a matter of ~ 1 hour, driving conditions improved very obviously (picture #8), relative to the original blindness (picture #1).
