Today [23:59]: #1) Site news #2) Half Life completed!

Site News

Finally, as promised, ArturMarques.com expands its interactivity. From now on, your feedback will not be restricted to the e-mail service. I will regularly run questionnaires, asking your opinion or hints, on several subjects.

Today you are free to input two answers. The first form, invites you to preview the winner of the 1999 female final at Roland Garros, France. The results of your submissions will be displayed next saturday night, but because the game happens in that afternoon, not all the answers will be considered.

Then second form will be running at least for the next 7 days - it asks your opinion on the Half-Life finale.

Meanwhile, due to the work required to put the questionnaires running, I did NOT have the time to write the 1st lesson of the Open GL tutorial. I think I will manage to debut it, in the next update.

This update also features some minor aesthetical changes, but strong code changes, such as a smaller font, that is implemented via my first DHTML thing: style sheets!

As I write, there is one small problem with the use of the style sheets: I didn't apply the style to all the pages in this website, because they are so many and that would take so much time to do... so there is a violation of the Hypermedia coherence, one of the most basic things that you learn when you study that subject.

When I have more time, I will edit all the site and apply it the new technology. For now, only this entrance page is DHTML enhanced.

Who will win the 1999 Roland Garros female final?

Martina Hingis

Steffi Graf

Half-Life [HL] Completed!

I've finally completed HL, the "game of 1998", according to so many magazines. HL was first mentioned in these pages, day 24 May 1999; back then, I wrote about how near to the finish I was. Well, yesterday I was able to devote it a few more minutes, enough to bring Freeman to a very unexpected situation :-)

The crucial HL's episodes are all set out of this planet... The only way I've found to progress, was NOT trying to kill every moving alien. For example, there were some of those blue monsters, which you only manage to kill, thanks to an air strike, in a previous episode... and ammo is so sparse, that it really is crazy to engage combat.

So, after much running, you do get to face a creature that you **must destroy**... its kind of a gigantic baby (!!) who vomits fire from his head... and has a structure of a Galactica spaceship... quite a strange fellow...

It is a disappointing final episode. I was expecting something different, in the line of what the game offers most of the time. But no surprise. HL gives you exactly what all the Quake engine based games have to offer: a supreme bang bang end.

But there is a small novelty: you can choose your ending message... How? Well, after killing the big boss, Freeman loses all his weapons and must make an option: accept a job in the line of what he has been doing for the last episodes... or dare to NOT accept such job and face a "war he can't win"... and you really can NOT... in fact you aren't even given the chance to try it...

Well, if you want to experience the ending yourself, go ahead and download my end-of-game saves. The ZIP file (67 K) includes both a quick save (which you can load, by pressing F7 while playing), and a regular save, which you can load, by choosing to do it, from the game's menu.

I really hope that by publishing the pictures here on the left, I am not spoiling the Half-Life experience to anyone. HL is a great game, and it really deserves your time, with no cheats, of course.

What do you think about the HL final?

The best I've ever seen!

Great, but...

Regular. We've all seen it before.

Poor

Bad!! How can this be the reward of so many playing hours?!

This is June poll #2 @ArturMarques.com

The questionnaire will be on-line for at least one week. Then it will be replaced by another one.

If you don't know what Half-Life is, you can learn about it, by downloading and playing its superb demo, for FREE. Just visit VALVE - the authors.

The HL demo is special: it consists of an episode that you will NOT find in the commercial product. So, its kind of a must....

poll closed! Results were published day 17 June 1999.
