This is the FFiF 0.1A main dialog box. You type a string; you select a file, or its whole folder, you choose binary [default] or plain-text search, and hit the "Do Search" button... then check the results.

FFiF - Fast Find in Files - is the new program on the VC++ tutorial! Lesson #5 goes wild away from the usual "everything explained to the last detail" style, and presents you with a new computer project of mine, who has no other intention than showing that:

- you can misc C and C++ code in VC++ MFC applications;

- the code is easy to port to plain C, as the new CGI [Common Gateway Interface] tutorial will show, until the end of September;

- you can code very fast using nothing but the knowledge of the previous lessons;

- download FFiF and try to program it yourself, just from Lesson #5 available C files. It is the VC++ tutorial first exercise! Good luck :)

So, today's tutorial does not give you ALL the source code, does not explain you the MFC bits, but it does give you the FREE version 0.1A of the FFiF application.

FFiF is slightly more than a regular "Find in Files" software: it can show you all the operating system details of a selected file, it can search in binary or text mode, it can search in a collection of files, it offers a progress indicator, it is extremely small [36 K] and fast, and it uses no more than the knowledge that was taught in the previous lessons - 1, 2, 3 and 4 - of the VC++ 6 tutorial!

The more impressive thing is that FFiF was written in just 5 hours. The code was rebuilt only 10 times. Read the "Conditions of Use" before downloading the file.

"Acid House" - "A Soft Touch" episode

I am finally writing [again] about Irvine Welsh's "Acid House" [ISBN 0099435012].

Irvine Welsh of Scotland, world famous thanks to the "Train spotting" movie, does have other fictional [?] works on the bookshelf. "Acid House" is one of them - the one I've been reading since August 1999.

"Acid House" is a collection of short stories, and I've been reviewing all of them. Read the previous reviews in August 1999, days 15, 17 and 19.

Today I write about "A Soft Touch", running from page 46 to page 53. And what a run!- I am sure this one has got to be one of the hardest readings for non-english people... There probably isn't a single paragraph with a correct syntax or even 100% composed by "real" english words.

"A Soft Touch" is a story about John, his [ex-] gal, Katriona, their child Chantel, her brothers', the Doyles; John's mother, who has the worst possible [and correct :)] opinion of Katriona, and a bloke named Larry who is "doing it" with Katriona, while using the electricity John pays...

The point is that they all live in very bad conditions, can't speak proper english [their english is even worst than my own :)], have "schemes running on", have problems with the police, are violent, have no humanity, and with the exception of John and his mother, Chantel knows no Love.

At some point, you will sympathize with John, but it is very obvious that the guy is brainless.

So, again, very __very__ alternative stuff from Irvine Welsh. There is one version of the book that is OUT OF PRINT, but the version I am reading, with a Sandro Sodano cover is still for sale.
