10-March-1999 [Artur Marques]
Today's contents, for now, are: #1) G-Loto bug #2) Braveheart #3) BYTE #4) GREY DREAMCAST #5) MICROSOFT going wrong, #6) Some Downloads. Plus, the usual picture of the day.
TIP of the day: Did you know that you can read some movie reviews, from the audio and home-theater documents sub-section?
I've found a small bug in the G-Loto project paper. The F1 sub-objective function should have weights 0.2, 0.2, 0.05, 0.05, 0.25 and 0.25. It's a minor correction to the initial document. You can NOT download the corrected paper yet, because me and Joćo Cintra, are working very hard to build a release 1.0 version of the program, and other changes might occur.
Braveheart - Un-missable movie [I absolutely mean it!]
Today, the portuguese public television [RTP1] will broadcast one of the most beautiful films ever made. Directed (and starring) by Mel Gibson, Braveheart is inspired in William Wallace, a scottish hero, cutted to pieces in 1305... It is a very, very strong piece of art.
The whole William Wallace legend is strictly based on a poem... there really is no undeniable proof that the man that screamed FREEDOM! while being chopped apart, has really existed.
No matter the truth, if you have never seen this movie, or read about William Wallace, I can assure you that it is CRIMINAL not to learn about the myth. I own a deluxe LASERDISC of Braveheart, with all the imaginable quality certifications (THX, DOLBY DIGITAL, 2.35:1), and if RTP1 doesn't kill the picture by breaking it every 20 minutes, and projecting it without the bars (4:3 is kind of crap...), you'll live a great and inspiring night.
If you think Cameron's Titanic is emotional... you'll find Braveheart a complete redefinition of the term. FREEDOM!
BYTE is dead for almost 1 FULL YEAR
The great old BYTE magazine died almost one year ago. The FINAL printed edition became available only to subscribers in June 1998. Then BYTE was bought by the company behind the magazine "Windows Sources", who promised subscribers a solution to their invested money... after all this time, the solution never came. For example, the guys are owing me OVER 2 FULL YEARS of magazines. Shame on you.
SEGA against gray imports on UK [strange]
SEGA is fighting too hard to prevent early adopters of buying the DREAMCAST console in Europe. The situation is particularly relevant to UK importers, who usually sell machines with the original japanese ROM, to those who can't wait for the old continent's release (Christmas 1999?).
However, this is new. "Gray" importations have always happened and never harmed a console. On the contrary! It is damn strange that SEGA is disturbed about japanese DREAMCASTs in the UK, mainly with growing rumors that the console will be *devoured* by SONY's PLAYSTATION 2.
MICROSOFT going wrong with ENCARTA 99
MICROSOFT is doing something totally unexpected. ENCARTA buyers are used to download updates to their encyclopedia, day 15 of every month. This happens since ENCARTA 95!, and it has only been late ONCE, with ENCARTA 98...
...until now. The JANUARY update for ENCARTA 99 was supposed to be available day 15 FEBRUARY, but, almost one month after schedule, it is still NOT available on Gate's web. Why?
Plus, rumors are that the update patch #2 for MS VISUAL STUDIO 6 will actually trash your MS DEVELOPER's NETWORK installation. Do not download or install it!
PowerStrip 2.40 FINAL - The cool graphics hardware tweaking utility has gone 2.40 FINAL. (640 K)

Call me whatever you want, but I am FASCINATED with the USA. I've only visited the country once, and I've only been to New York for 1 day... however it is such a fantastic city, with so much energy, that it is impossible not classify it as world's #1! I will be posting some of my NY pictures here, or even build a dedicated section. For now, enjoy the Statue of Liberty, against a Twin Towers background... now imagine the hiss on the streets, the lights, the planes... oh boy... stressing... NY has more planes in the sky per hour, than any other city in the world. There is such an air-traffic, that most small european villages have less cars on the streets! |
