Today's update debuts some interface changes. For the first time, I am using a JAVA applet as the way for visitors to go visit the previous news. Just in case the JAVA applet does not work on your browser, you can still use the "old style" HTML links, that are easier to implement, compatible with any client, but would soon become too big to stay @ the front page. So, the HTML links to the site's previous news, are gone to their private page, where they don't eat up precious front page space, and can grow without problem. Another novelty is that I've decided to put an end to the "PC Games are 100% OK" campaign. The campaign lasted for nearly 5 months and gathered over 3600 supporters. The issue is now clear: PC Games bring you nothing, other than positive interactive entertainment! Thank you for your support! The campaign was first mentioned, day 25 April 1999. |

click on a picture, for its full size, full horror version. !? How brutal can it get !? _THIS_ brutal! _PLEASE_ do not click on the picture, IF you are sensitive to horribly shocking pictures! |
The situation in East Timor simply does not improve. Indonesia keeps showing the world, how primitive and rude the human race can still be. I have no more words about this subject - only pictures. Go ahead and click on the pictures on your left, to experience some true horror. Now, try to put yourself in the skin of someone living in the territory... Just imagine the constant unbearable fear... and try to sense the abandon!!, as the entire world is watching and yet the killing goes on. However, I do not approve some protests against the USA! The USA, as any other country, has interests to defend, and it is not fair to say that they haven't done everything in their power. You should check my Timor Special, day 08 September 1999. My Timor Special allows you to send an automatic request for help to Timor, via a very simple form, where you just type any valid e-mail; plus, you can download videos and pictures of impressive popular demonstrations of concern for Timor @ Lisbon / Portugal / Europe. It's easy for you to do something! |

I go on reading Irvine Welsh's "Acid House". As promised, here are small reviews of my latest chapters: "The Last Resort on the Adriatic" is about Jim Banks and his second cruise on the Adriatic... This story runs from page 54 to 60 and it surely was written while Irvine was in sorrow, as it is obvious an effort to bring you down. Jim Banks spends the whole time thinking about his darling, Joan, who is NOT with him. In fact, Joan is dead, and that causes all the sorrow, despite the efforts of Marianne, with whom Banks would have sex, after a 10 years pause :) This story is the first you can read without thinking twice about what is actually written, as the terrible english of the previous personages goes away! Is that a plus? Given the context, I think it is. After the Adriatic, which will have a dramatic, but expected ending, there are 4 single page "stories"... "Sexual Disaster Quartet", kind of Oedipal... "The Cruel Bastard and the Selfish Fucker Get It On" is about a she and he... who end up living together :) "Lots of Laughter and Sex" which are said to be the barometers of a relationship... and "Robert K. Laird: A Sexual History"... a single paragraph; I wonder.. why was it written at all? I am now reading "Snuff", starting on page 65, and this one should go first in my "Acid House" ranking. You just wait until my next book reviews. For more about this book, check the following updates on days 15, 17, 19 [August 1999] and 03 [September 1999]. |

It's great to use the crosshair. You might ask why use binoculars?
In fact, if you are in a sniper mood, binoculars are not necessary.
You can shoot cars! Classic ones, sure. |
HnD - Mission into the darkness - Yugoslavia I finally played the very much idolized "soldier simulator" Hidden and Dangerous [H&D]. This is not the first time I write about the game, as you can see, by visiting the slight reference to it, day 05 July 1999. The H&D problems I did spot, while playing the demo, are not completely resolved in the retail version. In fact, your first hours with the game will be more of a nightmare, than anything else, as you will struggle to understand the erratic 3rd person camera, and despair to control your soldiers, in 1st person view. The 3rd person view, like the one in Tomb Raider, is very unstable, zooming in and out of your men, when least expected. It's also very easy to lock the camera, if you corner your current soldier against some wall. When that happens, your chance is to play in a Doom like perspective, although your gun will cover too much of the view and make your life even harder... After nearly one hour of efforts, just when I was about to quit, I found that I could turn off the gun's display and activate a crosshair... and H&D suddenly become a much, much better game! As I write, I completed the whole of mission #1: Italy. The Italy mission consists on 4 episodes, that will grow from the very easy "just cross the bridge" start sequence, to some defying moments. I am now playing the Yugoslavia mission, and I got stuck on the episode _after_ the "Mission into the darkness", not because of my lack of skill, but because the game crashed... giving me a reason to stop playing it :) H&D is a great game, in the sense that it is extremely enjoyable and addictive, but it has many classical faults, the greater being many bugs, that do affect your joy. The most irritating bug is the "sudden death" thing, when your soldier just collapses, for no reason! Another frequent game error is the floating soldier: after saving and reloading your position, it is probable that some your fighters will show up levitating... Finally, I didn't like the H&D reviews of some gaming magazines... stating that "one of the more appraised aspects of the game is the Artificial Intelligence of your rivals"... what a lie! I once watched a nazi soldier following "Lord Mule" up to the top of some oil tanks, then crashing to his own death, unable to use the stairs!! |
