Worms World Party - PC Game Review
My first Worms World Party (WWP) session, happened on a Dreamcast (DC);
and it wasn't as enjoyable as I expected. Then it was time for the PC
version, and the game totally redefined itself! To understand how and
why, let me brief you about this "Worms" thing.
The "Worms" series is now a classic, on its third iteration.
The game is all about little worms fighting each other. Worms organize
in teams and then fight the adversaries, on a turn based fashion, using
weapons that range from the low tech punch, to the high tech homing missile,
and the imaginative suicide sheeps - and no, I won't describe the whole
arsenal! So, it all gets down to "your worm picks a weapon, tries
to hit an adversary, then its the other team's turn". Pretty simple.
Again, when I first tried WWP on the DC, I got disappointed. The problem
is that the CPU worms need too much to make a decision, and that completely
cuts the "human versus machine mode" fun. Fortunately - or
at least I thought it would be - I have two DC controllers and was hopping
that I could play against some friend, thus bypassing the CPU speed problem.
Strangely, the DC version of WWP, does NOT support this playing mode.
Since its first inception, "Worms, the game" has been about
fun, in general, and multiplayer fun, in particular. Alleluia for the
PC version, that is CPU speedy and handles all possible forms of multiplayer
games! I spent a few hours playing against my girlfriend, via a LAN TCP/IP
connection, and it was utterly fun! Hurrah for Team 17's latest!... on
the PC.
There really isn't much more to comment on WWP: it features highly polished
2D graphics, an interesting soundtrack, very appropriate sound effects,
and allows so many different playing styles, that it sure holds a long
term appeal. This game is fun!, it is NOT a tech demo, it is not an experiment,
it does not bring anything new to the gaming scene, other than showing
that it is worth to refine what was already great.
Go get it!

Air Strike - you have very few
of these, so be wise.

Affaire a deux - aim for gas barrels,
and the surroundings might explode.

The rope - it is a good idea to
keep a distance from the adversary, before attacking him with guns with
high splash effects, such as the bazooka.
