40 Days and 40 Nights - 40DN - (DIVX Movie Review)

This is the strangest movie to land on my divx library, for many months. Its oddity, comes from the very normal nature of all characters, boys and girls! There are no science fiction ingredients, no absurd places, no unusual nothing... except for a young male adult who decides not to have any sexual activity, including self entertainment, for 40 full days.

Sex is a very natural thing; in fact monogamist societies are a tad artificial, by pressing individuals towards a single partner; something that I think is mostly justifiable by cultural reasons, and not by any biological guidance. This is non consensual - true - but if people could undress all their religious and social weights, and if biology alone were to speak, you probably wouldn't put all your eggs in one basket...

Its hard to resist any primary drive, and 40DN tries to build a comedy upon that. Unfortunately, you won't laugh a lot; instead, it is very reasonable you end up meditating on matters of abstinence, chastity, the meaning of love, the new (daring) sexuality of women, and asking questions like "could I do it?", or "he is wrong on doing it?".

But, who is he? He is Matt (played by Josh Hartnett). Matt decides what you already know, after breaking up with the Nicole (played by Vinessa Shaw), but he'll have a hard time (literally...) while trying to respect that decision, mostly because of a betting pool that his friends are promoting at the Internet design company, where they all work.

40DN scores some funny moments, until Erica (Shannyn Sossamon) steps in. Matt really loves Erica, but he is committed to his chastity option, and the girl doesn't know it, so she doesn't understand how he can be "so cold".

Bottom line is a single adjective: amusing.
