Desert Combat 0.7 for BF1942 (PC Game)

Desert Combat is a Total Conversion (TC) of 2003's best game: Battlefield 1942 (BF1942). And it is available for free, from http://www.desertcombat.com.

I never wrote about BF1942 before, because all the minutes I could spend on it, I spent them, playing the game... Although BF1942 now lives mostly as a multiplayer experience, it is also a great single-player challenge.

I completed the original BF1942 campaign mode on "hard", and it was... hard. But when I tried some Desert Combat maps, it was more than hard! I probably just need some oiling again, but it might be that the new weapons are far more effective than their WW2 equivalents.

New weapons? It happens that Desert Combat is kind of "BF2000"; that is, the same game, but set on year 2000. There are two sides: the coalition and the opposition (imaginative names, eh?). Most players will just call them "the brits and the americans" and "the iraqui", depending on the moustaches, of course.

The new weapons, plus some considerable changes to the soldier's classes, are what makes this TC modification (mod) superb. Coalition soldiers can now fly Apaches, F16s and AC-130 Gunships; fire M16s and high precision sniper riffles, plus some new mines and assault weapons that I can't name.
The opposition can fly Hinds, fire Scuds (!), drive amphibious scout vehicles and fire their own updated machine-guns and riffles.
The final result is a pair of well balanced teams.

To be honest, I don't like flying planes in BF1942 - it is much too complicated. I prefer ground-to-ground action. That is why I am very pleased with the new sniper riffle: it has a long range effectiveness and it does hit whatever you aim it at.
Besides the deadlier snipper class, the assault and the anti-armor classes also received considerable improvements to their hardware.
Like gold on blue, there are new classes: special-operations, heavy-assault and support. The spec-ops carry a M5 with zoom, remote mines and binoculars; note that a single remote mine should destroy most vehicles. If you play as a "support" soldier, you can repair BOTH vehicles and people - so precious... As for the heavy assault species, they get a mega machine gun! Beware!

All the new gear is superbly modelled and even when playing on old maps, it just feels like a new game. Everything helps, including many professional details, like the ability to spawn on the air, the soldiers' modern camouflage, and the transport helicopters' machine-guns.
