Ils (2006)
I watched it on 2006–08–10, very late on the night.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465203/
This is the most intense strictly suspense movie I have ever watched!
Strictly suspense means there is no explicit violence on screen. There is no punching, stabbing or shooting. In fact, this movie is so minimalist that there are only two real characters: Clémentine Sauveur and Lucas Medvec. The other few people that do appear, have such brief showings, that they don’t mature to the point of deserving a name.
The fact that the story is “based on true events” certainly adds to the suspense. Clémentine was a French professor on Snagov (land of the Dracula), Romania. Medvec was her husband/boyfriend. They both lived in a beautiful old, enormous, house. One night, someone will want to play with them.
The movie achieves its intensity by NOT showing what is going on, although it never feels like if it is hiding events, because the action is filmed from Clementine’s and/or Lucas’ point-of-view.
This surely is an extreme experience: the person who watched it with me, who is much more sensitive than I am, did a lot of legs exercises and had to go the bathroom…
My rating: 9/10

Hi! Thank you for posting!
Back in 2006, when I first watched the movie I was intrigued by the true story claim and searched for some evidence.
I remember reading about one dead tourist, found somewhere, near Snagov, allegedly attacked by a gang, but I can’t recall any details.
Today, there are thousands of pages on Ils and it is much harder to find anything other than the movie reviews.
I just Googled for some “Ils true story evidence” and couldn’t spot it too. Sorry.
it’s not really based on a true story for goodnessakes, any more than the texas chainsaw massacre is
Even if i’m not into horror movies, I really find this one amazing… reminds me of the Blairwitch project, but even more subtile…
Actually, it is based on a true story, but the names quoted in the film are not the true ones. Indeed, it was a couple of Austrians in Tchekoslovakia. This trick was utilized by the directors to intensify the suspense of the film …
