Here are some tips and notes for those running Worldwind on Windows 7:

(1) After installing the application, run it ONCE, so that it can write the configuration file.

Then close the application and open the corresponding XML code at

C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\NASA\World Wind\1.4.0.0\WorldWind.xml

The purpose of editing the XML is one setting alone: the cache folder location.

In my system the default, otherwise uneditable, location was

<CachePath>C:\wp\geo\nasaww\Cache</CachePath>

but I wanted it to be something else in a different hard drive, because I use many GBs of cache packs, that consists of one million+ JPGs, that are just too many for I what I think there should exist in the system disk.

(2) Some valueable shortcuts are

ALT+Q for the GUI (Graphical User Interface) for the settings;

CTRL+H for the download progress manager, very useful to check if there is communication going on, or if the tiles are coming from the cache.

(3) Some useful URLs are

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/download.html – the main download site;

http://forum.worldwindcentral.com/index.php – the main WorldWind community forum, I think;

http://www.worldwinddata.com/ for *OLD* cache packs;

*carefully* browse NASA’s

arc.nasa.gov

machines to find the very latest cache packs.

To find which NASA’s sub-domains you should search, use a http proxy between Worldwind and the Internet and observe the traffic. For example, I am observing the planet Venus and one tile just came from:

http://worldwind25.arc.nasa.gov/venus/venus.aspx?T=fmap-color&L=1&X=5&Y=2

Opera is my favorite brower, but the latest version is doing something absolutely crazy in my view: the address bar does NOT show the full URL, by default.

They are dumbing down users, thinking that users will be better served if not aware of all the URL’s details. This rises a security risk, obfuscates browsing, makes learning the WWW structure less trivial for newcomers, and it simply trashes the underlying technology fundamentals.

Not acceptable!

Fortunately there is a way to get your full URL back:

(1) at the address bar type

opera:config

(2) pick the “show all” check box

(3) do CTRL^F (find) for the text “show full URL“

(4) once found, check the corresponding check box

(5) pick save

It is done.

I watched Eden Lake on 2009–06–18.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1020530/

I was expecting an intense movie and indeed it was. Labelled as of the horror genre, it could be more precisely classified as a torture sick flic, with a twist. The twist is that the torturers are british children and the victims are a young couple, with a life project, that is going to end at “Eden Lake”, a beautiful location, where you would never expect bad things to happen.

So is this introduction a spoiler? It is not. The movie is promoted giving away this much, so most viewers know what to expect. However, because “horror” is also about suspense and surprise, I was disappointed that the movie came short on both, particularly regarding the ending chapter.

I usually appreciate “sad endings”, because in horror movies, once things start turning less bad for the leading “good” characters, the trend tends to hold, up to a previewable end.

The same goes for Eden Lake, but this time I would have appreciated a “happy ending”!, because of its surprise effect: the unfortunate young couple gets into trouble very early on… and that is it. It is a very “heavy” movie, that doesn’t uplift a person in any possible way. Quite an experience.

If you want to use C# to write CGI applications, you might stumble on some technical difficulties, when using the IIS web server: no matter what are the permissions you set for the folder holding the CGI executable, whenever executing it, the web server doesn’t process the file and tries to serve it as if the client had requested its download!

One workaround is to explicitly map some dummy extension, to the EXE that you want to use as the CGI application.
For example, map “.CSX” to the executable that is the output of your C# CGI solution.

The HTML that needs to invoke the CGI, must invoke the dummy (zero bytes) .CSX file, because invoking the .EXE would produce the IIS problem already mentioned.

In order to do the “.CSX” <—> “CGI.EXE” mapping, (1) create one server side directory (virtual or not) to hold the C# CGI solutions.

The picture below shows that, in some computer, the “\cgi-bin\cgi_cs” folder was chosen to hold the C# executables.

After (1), make sure that you (2) create an “IIS application” for the folder, having execute permissions for BOTH script and executables.

Once the application is created, it is possible to configure it. So, (3) click the configuration button.

(4) The relevant tab in “application configuration” is the “mappings” tab. Here, click the “Add” button. This operation is the way to build the aforementioned “.CSX” <—> “CGI.EXE” relation.

(5) In the “mapping” dialog, browse to the C# .EXE file that is intended to run as a CGI; then type “.CSX” as the extension; then you can uncheck the “check that file exists” option and, finally, press the OK button.

If the OK button is dimmed/grayed/not enabled, just click once on the executable textbox!

(6) After this, the “application configuration” dialog box should list the “.CSX” extension at the bottom.

In order to use the new mapping, restart (stop, then start) the IIS web server.

Having done these six steps, all that is left is to code the right invocation of the CGI. For example, if using forms and its action attribute, point the action to some empty .CSX file.

To build an empty CGI.CSX file, go to the “command prompt” and type “copy con cgi.csx”, followed by ENTER, followed by CTRL+Z (which is the end-of-file character).

http://msdn.microsoft.com/academic/ – developers’ network;
http://imaginecup.com – concursos para estudantes;
http://student-partners.com – programa, para estudantes, mas que não inclui Portugal;

- no extremo esquerdo situa-se um desínteresse acentuado dos candidatos pela tecnologia/Informática/automação;

Internet e Economia do Conhecimento

Tarifa Plana
